Picking Outfits Can Be Stressful
The number one question I get whenever someone officially books their session is, "What should I wear?" I both love and hate this question because what you wear in a photoshoot should reflect you, but there are some do's and don'ts when it comes to photos that you will always look back on.
The Don'ts
Let's start off with some things things that don't always translate well on camera.
Something Uncomfortable:
For most sessions clients want a lot of movement and candid shots, with this being said wearing an outfit that you can't really move in is sometimes a deal-breaker for these shots. An outfit that is too short, too big, too restricting, or too long can really put a damper on how a session plays out.
Prints on Prints on Prints:
This is partially just my opinion, but many other photographers share it too. Too many prints or something too "busy" can often translate poorly on camera. This also depends on the location of the shoot, if you are in a more urban area or an area with buildings behind you (for example Virginia Tech) I would let the background and your face/cap and gown have all the attention. However, if you are in a field or more rural setting some patterns can really brighten and liven up the photos. Some patterns I recommend are florals, simple polka dots (be careful though), and plaid for boys or family sessions. Some patterns to steer clear from are stripes, chevron, or anything super geometric.
Uncomfortable Shoes:
Most photo sessions involve walking, sometimes a lot of it. Wearing shoes that are going to give you blisters can really affect posing and positions. This is a bit of common sense but stay away from stilettos unless you are super comfortable in being in them, or I recommend bringing a comfy pair to walk in and changing once we are ready for photos.
The Do's
Now for the fun part!
Fun Shoes:
As I said above it might be best to stay simple for your outfits, so make sure to have fun with your shoes. A pop of color, a fun bow, or a cool design is always fun and can help make your photos memorable.
Bring your cap and gown:
Even though they are not the most flattering I promise you will want at least a couple of photos with your cap and gown and if not you, your parents. For these make sure you have at least one outfit that looks normal and matches your gown appropriately. For girls I recommend a white dress with normal sleeves, nothing too puffy or lumpy under the gown. For boys I recommend dress pants that don't clash and a basic dress shirt. I always recommend wearing what you will wear for graduation with your cap and gown just so you can always look back on those photos and remember.
Something timeless:
This is a personal preference, but I always love a more timeless look so that photos don't go out of style. The last thing you want to do is look back on such a fun moment and cringe at your outfit, shoes, or hair. This is sometimes inevitable but stay away from micro trends that will be cringy next year. A classic white dress, navy pants, etc. are always in style.
Overall, wear something that you love and feel yourself in! Also remember to be comfortable and able to move, don't stress, below are some options that I have been loving.
